PRP and HairGro Plus for Hair Loss
Platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections are the latest technology to provide effective, minimally invasive treatment options for both male and female pattern hair loss. Studies have also shown benefit in alopecia areata and improvement in scarring.
The advent of PRP therapy and HairGro Plus allows for the use of multiple growth factors and stem cells to provide a highly successful non-surgical method for hair restoration. Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins capable of stimulating cellular growth, hair follicle proliferation and healing of damaged areas of skin. The combination of PRP and HairGro Plus provides enhanced stimulation of stem cells and hair follicles to promote improved hair restoration and regrowth.
Causes of Hair Loss
Male and female pattern hair loss (Androgenetic alopecia) is a condition which affects 10-15% of the population. Androgenetic alopecia results in the gradual thinning and eventual complete loss of hair follicles in specific areas of the scalp. Patients can be affected at very early ages and until recently treatment options were only marginally successful and often involved expensive surgical procedures.
The PRP process begins with the drawing of blood from the patient. The whole blood is then spun down in a centrifuge and the PRP is extracted. To enhance the clinical response, HairGro Plus is added to the platelet rich plasma extract and then injected directly into the affected areas of the scalp. The PRP mixture is injected using very small needles and the treatment usually takes 20-30 minutes. A topical anesthetic can be applied to the areas prior to the injections to make the process nearly painless. Following the treatment session, the scalp may feel slightly numb but these symptoms are very temporary. No special post care treatment or down time is required.
Treatments are spaced apart every 6 weeks. Depending on the amount of initial hair loss, several injection sessions (2-3) may be required and occasional maintenance treatments to insure optimal hair restoration.
Are you a candidate for PRP?
PRP therapy can reverse thinning of the hair and reactivate hair follicles in the affected areas thereby promoting a return of your normal hair growth pattern and a fuller head of hair. PRP has been shown to be very effective for some patients with male and female pattern hair loss but it will not be beneficial for patients with scarring alopecia or complete hair loss. So early intervention while the hair follicles are still present is critical for PRP treatments to be effective. An initial consultation by West Houston Dermatology will help determine the cause of your hair loss and if you are a candidate for PRP and HairGro Plus therapy.
