PRP with HairGro Plus®

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss is clinically referred to as alopecia and can generally be divided into two types: scarring and non-scarring alopecia. Scarring alopecia involves the inflammation and permanent destruction of the hair follicle complex. It is typically the result of an inflammatory medical condition, usually accompanied by erythema (redness) and scarring.

Non-scarring male and female pattern hair loss (Androgenetic alopecia) is a condition which affects approximately 50% of both men and women over the course of their lifetime. Androgenetic alopecia results in the gradual thinning beginning at the vertex or crown of the scalp to the forehead. By the age of 50 approximately 85% of men have significantly thinning hair – beginning with symptoms around the age of 21. Men commonly show temporal recession and vertex involvement which can progress to total baldness.

Patients may be affected at very early ages and existing treatment options have shown to be only marginally successful at preventing or reversing hair loss. Many of the preferred medications have produced poor, inconsistent results, at times including sexually adverse effects making them much less popular. Surgical hair restoration can be very expensive, painful and invasive – many times producing results that are not cosmetically appealing.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy has been used effectively in multiple fields of medicine including orthopedics, pain relief, wound healing and most recently – dermatology. PRP which is derived from the patient’s own blood contains more than 30 active proteins and seven growth factors that are critical in tissue healing, stem cell activation and neovascularization. These proteins and growth factors, when injected into the patient’s scalp, support stem cell migration, promote blood vessel growth, and stimulate protein and collagen synthesis – all of which are important in promoting new hair growth.

PRP with HairGro Plus® for Hair Loss

PRP with HairGro Plus® contains dehydrated amniotic membrane allografts (AMA) which have many promising applications in medicine and have been used successfully in ophthalmology, plastic surgery, orthopedics and dermatology. Amniotic membranes are a robust source of stem cells, growth factors, highly organized collagen, matrix proteins and anti-inflammatory cytokines. AMAs are non-immunogenic, antibacterial, enhancers of the wound healing process, reducers of inflammation and scar formation, and recruiters of stem cells to wound sites. By mixing AMAs with PRP, we now have a ‘super-charged’ PRP with HairGro Plus® containing 50 additional growth factors and stems cells that are key to accelerating the rate and degree of regeneration of hair follicles and the ability to sustain new hair growth.

PRP with HairGro Plus® provides enhanced stimulation of stem cells and hair follicles to promote improved hair restoration and re-growth. This highly successful, non-surgical method for hair restoration is revolutionizing the treatment of hair loss. Patients have finally been given a simple, minimally invasive and cost effective option that is consistently producing high overall patient satisfaction!

PRP with HairGro Plus® Process

The PRP with HairGro Plus® process begins with the drawing of whole blood from the patient. The blood is then spun down in a centrifuge and the PRP serum is extracted. To enhance the clinical response, HairGro Plus® is added to the platelet rich plasma extract and then injected directly into the affected areas of the scalp. The PRP HairGro Plus® mixture is injected using very small needles with the treatment usually takes 20-30 minutes. A topical anesthetic can be applied to the areas prior to the treatment, making the process nearly painless. Following the treatment session, the scalp may feel slightly numb but these symptoms are very temporary. No special post care treatment or down time is required.

Treatments are spaced apart every 4-6 weeks. Depending on the amount of initial hair loss, several sessions (2-3) may be required with occasional maintenance treatments to insure optimal hair restoration.

What are patients saying?

“I went into the treatment a little bit scared that I’m going to get shots in my head, like anybody who does not like shots. Once I got the treatment, I realized it’s not painful at all – a little bit of discomfort but not painful at all. I will definitely do a second treatment!”

“I was pretty much amazed how it took 30 minutes, start to finish! I expected to be here about an hour and a half. But thirty minutes – that’s half a lunch time! Pretty amazing!”

“I look forward to sharing my experience here with everybody!”

“It wasn’t as painful as I thought it would was going to be. I could feel it was a little warm going into my scalp…but not as painful as I thought it would be.”

‘I’m excited to see the results. This will be life changing for me.”

“I own quite a few cowboy hats and baseball caps. I plan on keeping them, but not using them as a crutch any longer!”

Are you a candidate for PRP with HairGro Plus® ?

PRP with HairGro Plus® therapy can reverse thinning of the hair and reactivate hair follicles in the affected areas thereby promoting a return of a normal hair growth pattern and fuller head of hair. PRP with HairGro Plus® has been shown to be very effective for some patients with male and female pattern hair loss but it may not be beneficial for patients with scarring alopecia or complete hair loss. Early intervention, while the hair follicles are still present, is critical for PRP with HairGro Plus® treatments to be effective. An initial evaluation by West Houston Dermatology will help determine the cause of your hair loss and whether you are a candidate for PRP with HairGro Plus® therapy.
