What is a Photofacial treatment?
A Photofacial laser treatment involves a series of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) from a Luminus laser. Treatments are targeted at improvement of photoaging, rosacea, melasma and facial lentigines (brown spots on face due to age or sun exposure).
How does the treatment work?
IPL laser light is applied as a series of gentle pulses to the affected areas. Without damaging the skin, the laser light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the dilated blood vessels or the dark pigmentation in the skin. These blood vessels or brown spots are destroyed. Lesions may darken before they flake off or are absorbed by the body.
What are the benefits of Photofacial Laser treatments?
Treatment improves sun spots, age spots, dull complexions, uneven pigmentation, large pores, sun damaged skin and early signs of aging. It also improves red flushing skin, rosacea, and broken capillaries.
How many treatments will I need?
For optimal results, a series of 2-3 treatments are recommended. Most patients see significant improvement with two to three treatments while others may require more treatments to resistant areas. Follow-up treatments may be needed once a year to maintain desired results.
What is a treatment like?
First, the treated area is cleansed thoroughly and a topical anesthetic or numbing gel is applied for 20 minutes prior to the procedure. Next, the laser light treatment is delivered accompanied by only a minor sensation of discomfort. After treatment, the gel is removed, the area is cleansed, and a post treatment cream and sunscreen is applied.
Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects are rare. Right after the treatment, the skin may appear flushed, brown pigmented spots may appear darker, and capillaries may be more visible. These findings will lessen over the next several days while the skin heals. Limiting sun exposure for several weeks prior to and after treatment will greatly minimize the risk of complications.
What improvement will I see?
Many patients see a 70% to 90% improvement following treatment and most patients are extremely happy with their results. After successive treatments, your skin will feel and look much smoother and have a more radiant and even tone.
